Figure 4.5: The extent of peat in Fen Meadow, defined in augering and from a slight earthwork where the peat has shrunk compared to the surrounding gravels. To the north the former stream course is also visible as a slight earthwork, while geophysical survey revealed a possible early channel south of the modern road. The stream on the west side of the meadow is an early modern drain. The probable course of the Roman road in Fen Meadow is shown by an area of metalling (section A–B) c. 7.5 m wide. Geophysical survey did not show the road but does suggest ridge and furrow extending southward from beneath the modern road as far as the Roman alignment, contrary to Hall’s survey. If these linear features are not an artefact of the survey, then the medieval road alignment was on the original Roman course not the present one
