Figure 5.2: A 97 mm lead round shot, seen in situ at about 30 cm depth at the bottom of the topsoil. The damage to the upper surface of the round shot appears to have been caused by a modern ploughshare striking the upper surface. This find was exceptional in being half buried in the subsoil, so was excavated in a more formal way to establish whether it lay within a cut feature, but it did not. All other finds were recovered from within the topsoil. The distinctive reddish clay subsoil, which has led to reddish topsoil, exists across most of the core of the battlefield but nowhere else in the survey area. 100 mm vertical scale (BOS 5365)
