Brian Clough died of stomach cancer in Derby on 20 September 2004. He once said: ‘Don’t send me flowers when I’m dead. If you like me, send them while I’m alive.’ Asked how he’d like to be remembered, he remarked: ‘I want no epitaphs of profound history and all that type of thing. I contributed – I hope they will say that, and I would hope somebody liked me.’
We did, Brian.
