Memories

All the black towers had similar layouts. Nick remembered them well from his own time working in the security forces, and he had a copy of their schematics too, somewhere in the extended storage of his mind. He knew all the security codes, and he knew more than enough to provide assistance to the Augmented whenever they required it.

All these things he did automatically. It was second nature to him, but he knew too that there was another side to him, a side that the Kamari didn't want to come out.

He wasn't supposed to remember anything about his previous life. The Kamari had done something to him to make him forget - and it had worked for a time. But Nick had touched the Dome Shield when Helen Thompson had used him to test the Refractor Orb, and the Lasrecon had flowed through him, making him feel so alive. Everything had changed after that. His memories had been returning to him, one by one.

So many memories crowded around him now, a jumble of incomplete pieces that had once been the sum of his life. He cherished them more than anything. He hated the Kamari, and he hated what they had done to him, but most of all, he hated them for what they had taken away from him - memories of the faces of the people he had loved.

He could still feel Lisa, even though he couldn't see her face in his mind anymore. He imagined her waiting for her him to come home with the wooden carving of a flower that he had promised her for her birthday. How long had she waited? How long had she sat and cried?

Nick felt anger rising up inside him. The familiar voice in his head reassured him that everything was okay, but he didn't listen to it now. He knew that it was nothing but a lie. Every part of his life had gone to hell. His family had been left to suffer alone, not knowing whether he was alive or dead.

Nick swam in a pool of disparate memories, the sad remains of what had once been his life. He would never hold Rachel in his arms again. He would never see his daughter's smile. When a Monkey Droid ran down the corridor towards him, he cut it in half with his miniguns and trampled it into the floor. Rage burned inside him, demanding an escape.
