MARSHALL TRIMBLE: ARIZONA’S OFFICIAL STATE HISTORIAN

Marshall Trimble has been called the “Will Rogers of Arizona.” He’s a “cowboy philosopher,” educator, lecturer, folk singer and stage performer. He appears frequently on radio and television as a goodwill ambassador for the state. He taught Arizona history at Scottsdale Community College for forty years.

His first book, Arizona , was published in 1977 by Doubleday in New York. Since then, he’s written more than twenty books on Arizona and the West.

He answers questions about the Old West in True West Magazine ’s popular column, “Ask the Marshall.” In 2006, he received a regional Emmy for hosting the television show Arizona Backroads .

A former marine, in 2004, he was inducted into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame and is a founding member of the Arizona Peace Officer Memorial Board for lawmen killed in the line of duty.

In 2007, the Arizona Office of Tourism honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his many years of service to his native state. He served on the Arizona Centennial Commission from 2008 to 2012. In 2010, he received the Wild West History Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

He was inducted into the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame in 2011. That same year, he received the Al Merito Award from the Arizona Historical Society in recognition for lifelong distinguished service in promoting Arizona history. In 2011, the Arizona Centennial Commission honored him along with seven other Arizonans as “One of Arizona’s Most Inspiring Leaders.” Included among the seven were Senator Barry Goldwater and Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

In 2012, he was selected for the U.S. State Department’s “Cowboy Hall of Fame Tour,” a goodwill visit to Kyrgyzstan to visit our troops and share American cowboy culture with the people of that country.

The Historical League of the Arizona Historical Society named him one of seven “Historymakers” for the year 2014.

That same year, he received the Semper Fi Award from the U.S. Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.
