THE FACSIMILE

This notebook is in the Faraday papers, which are part of the Collections of the Royal Institution; its manuscript number is RI MS F4 J21.

It consists of 22 leaves plus a marbled cover and one insertion tipped in at opening 18. It measures 7¼ by 8¾ inches (18.3 by 22.2 cm). The watermark is Joynson 1846 and the insert is also Joynson, but undated. William Joynson (c.1802-74) was a major paper manufacturer, employing 500 men, in St Mary Cray, Kent.

The content and layout of the notebook is typical of Faraday’s method of delivering his lectures. On left-hand openings Faraday listed the experiments that he wished to demonstrate and that would be prepared by his long-term assistant, Charles Anderson. On the opposite opening Faraday noted the main points that he wished to get across to his audience and keyed them by number to the experiments.

The lecture lists are mounted behind each other and so have been scanned individually. The insert in opening 18 follows that opening, so there is no disjunction in reading occasioned by its placement.
