This roster of men who served with the 72nd New York is organized by company but starts with officers who did not serve with a particular company. Band members and field and staff men appear in their own sections. Officers frequently moved from company to company as the needs of the regiment dictated, and the list of all officers who served within a company appears at the beginning of each company’s section. The full description of each officer along with their date of commission and subsequent promotions appears with the company into which they were originally mustered. Errors regarding name spellings, ages, dates served or discharge information are regrettable but reflect the information found in the source material. This roster is based on information found primarily in the Annual Report of the Adjutant-General of the State of New York for the Year 1901, which provides comprehensive information for each man who served; New York in the War of the Rebellion, 1861 to 1865, which provides a compilation of officer assignments; and the History of the Third Regiment Excelsior Brigade 72nd New York Volunteer Infantry, 1861–1865, which provides a more detailed description of officer assignments within the regiment, along with a list of field and staff and band members.
