INTERNATIONAL VILLAGE MALL, 2018
Mei Zhou, ninety, was getting relief from the midday sun with a few of her friends at the International Village Mall, a Chinatown shopping center with a food court, clothing stores, and air-conditioning. They were sitting on a bench, all looking fly.
We squatted down as she gave us her life story.
“I used to work as a seamstress,” she said. “I would make pants, clothes—anything.”
In the case of her outfit, she made her rose hat and purple windbreaker sling bag—both expertly well- constructed.
“Other people are wearing the same thing,” she said, discussing the monotony of mainstream fashion. With Zhou’s style, that is far from the case.
