DAILY RITUAL

ALPINE RECREATION CENTER, 2016

We met Sow Ling Wong, eighty-seven, while she was out getting her daily newspaper. Her pattern mixing created a balance that was so pleasing to the eye—a bold busy purple with a more neutral knit vest, both with floral decorative patterns. Ms. Wong was another example of “I-would-never-think-of-that-how-did-you-put-this-together?”—one of the simplest yet most memorable looks we’ve come across.

Ms. Wong worked as a dressmaker in Chinatown for twenty-five years and is now retired. Her daily routine consists of grocery shopping, cooking, and laundry. In the afternoon, she treats herself to a newspaper.
