Mr. Leung, eighty-three, stepped outside his door right as we walked by, wearing a cool coal hat, San Francisco fleece sweater from Fisherman’s Wharf (beloved by both tourists and Chinatown seniors), and a striped knit sweater. It was an auspicious meeting since his apartment building number was 888. Eight is considered to be a lucky number in Chinese culture, since eight or ba sounds like fa, which means fortune. We were lucky to have this chance encounter.
