HEALTH BOWL PLAY BY PLAY
(Composite from Star-Ledger and The Herald-News) First Quarter
Co-captains Benny Babula and Johnny Grembowitz, of Garfield, and Captain Davey Eldredge, of Miami, huddled with the officials for the toss of the coin. Garfield won the toss and elected to kick off to Miami. Miami elected to defend the east goal. Babula kicked to the Miamians’ two. Mathews returned to the 20. Koesy swept his own left end for 10 yards, Grembowitz making a brilliant tackle to stop the elusive back. Koesy was hurt and Davey Eldredge replaced him. Eldredge electrified the crowd on the next play by whipping through left tackle for 16 yards and another first down on the Miami 46. Grembowitz intercepted Eldredge’s pass on his own 46 and was nailed in his tracks.
Grembowitz and Orlovsky smashed through the center of the Miami line for a first down on the Stingarees’ 43. Babula went around left end for three yards before Moore stopped him. Orlovsky gained one yard on a spinner play. Babula passed to Orlovsky for a first down on the Miami 29, Mathews forcing the Garfield back out of bounds. Babula blazed around left end for still another first down, placing the leather on the Miami 17. Babula, stumbling and stiff-arming, reached the Stingarees’ nine where he was topped by Eldredge. Babula was stopped by Fancher for no gain at center. Babula, attempting to skirt left end, was smothered by half of the Florida team. Babula whipped through the right tackle for five yards and a first down on the Miami four. Babula lost a yard at the center of the line, where he was stopped by James, and the New Jersey team called timeout.
Babula roared through right tackle for a touchdown as a dozen photographers flashed bulbs in his face as he dove over the Miami line. Babula’s placement was wide and the score was Garfield 6, Miami 0.
With Orlovsky holding the ball, Babula kicked off to the Miami 11. Mathews lateraled to Eldredge and he danced back to the 35, stopped by Hintenberger. Eldredge skirted left end for six. Miranda broke through and smeared Comfort for a one-yard loss. Eldredge could gain but one yard in two attempts. Eldredge punted to the New Jersey 26. Orlovsky gathered the pigskin to his chest and galloped back to his 36. On a reverse, Young picked up two yards. Babula’s pass, intended for Grembowitz, was short. Babula punted beautifully to the Miami 14. Wagnesz downed the ball.
Eldredge skipped around left end for three. Eldredge, feinting as if to pass, spun around right end for five as the first quarter ended with the scored Garfield 6, Miami 0.
Second Quarter
As play resumed, Rogers plunged over center for first down on the Miami 25. Eldredge visited left tackle for five. Grembowitz halted him. The fast-stepping Miami halfback collected another first down with a brilliant 11-yard dash through left guard. He was in the clear when Fick and Grembowitz wrapped their arms around him. Wagnesz stopped Comfort for a one-yard loss but Eldredge pestered Garfield again with a six-yard excursion at right end. Comfort blazed through right guard for 17 yards, making it a first down on the Garfield 36. The entire Garfield secondary made the tackle. Garfield called time out.
Eldredge garnered three yards in two tries at left end. Grembowitz again pulled the Miamian’s legs from under him. Eldredge’s pass, sailing toward Brown, was blocked by Orlovsky. That is, the ball hit the Garfield player in the face. Miami was penalized five yards for excessive time out. The penalty was the first ruling by the officials.
The crowd came screaming to its feet on the next play when Comfort hurled a long, high aerial to Brown, who caught the pigskin on the Garfield nine. Brown, however, fumbled and Wagnesz recovered the leather on the Garfield nine.
Babula punted to the Miami 46 and Eldredge returned to midfield. The play was called back. Garfield was penalized to its own one-yard line. The officials ruled that the New Jersey backfield failed to come to a stop after shifting.
Babula dropped back into the end zone and booted the ball to the Miami 36. The crowd gave the 68-yard boot a reverberating roar. Eldredge returned the leather to the Garfield 38 where Babula hustled up the field to make the tackle. Mathews failed to gain at the center of the line. Eldredge fumbled and recovered. The play cost the Miamians 15 yards as Leskanic brought Eldredge down. Comfort’s pass hit Smith in the face on the Garfield 14 and got away from him. Eldredge’s cleats sent the ball spiraling out of bounds on the Garfield 10.
Babula danced around right end for four. The N.J. aggregation, confident and playing with the smoothness of a well-oiled machine, had more poise at this stage of the game than the Florida gridders. Garfield called time out. Babula and Orlovsky picked up five yards between them in two tries at the center of the line. Orlovsky received a resounding tackle and coach Art Argauer took him out of the encounter after suffering an injury to his collarbone. Kazaren replaced him.
Babula punted 35 yards to the Miami 46 where Young downed the kick. Eldredge’s pass was intercepted by Kazaren on the Garfield 29. Smith stopped Kazaren in his tracks.. Grembowitz and Babula gained two yards at left tackle and the first half ended. The score was still Garfield 6, Miami 0.
Third Quarter
With the exception of Kazaren in the backfield and Fick at guard, Garfield’s lineup appeared unchanged as the second half opened. Miami’s lineup was the same which left the field at the end of the first half.
Barnes kicked off to Kazaren on Garfield’s five-yard stripe and ran it back to the 17 where Brown tackled him. Babula raced around right end for 19 yards before being hauled down by Washington. Babula passed to Young, who lateraled to Kazaren. The play gained six yards. Babula dug through right guard for seven more then Benny flipped a 14-yard pass to Butts, bringing the ball to the Miami 38. On second down, Babula tried left tackle but failed to gain when Brown stopped him. Again Benny tried left tackle but Charles Washington halted him for no gain. Babula pulled the fans to their feet when a 15-yard dash around Miami’s right flank, giving Garfield a first down on the Stingaree 20, where Mathews forced him out of bounds.
Garfield scored its second touchdown on the next play when Babula faked a line smash and handed the leather off to Grembowitz, who sped wide around Miami’s left end to score all by himself. Babula split the middle of Miami’s line for the extra point and Garfield led, 13-0.
Librera’s kickoff slithered out of bounds on the Miami 49 and he replaced Babula in the Garfield lineup. Eldredge scampered four yards around right end then Comfort added four at right guard. Eldredge whipped 17 yards around left end before Grembowitz pulled him to earth. The play gave Miami a first down on the Garfield 26. Eldredge whipped a pass down the left side and Harvey James grabbed it after a Boilermaker deflected it into the air.
It was first and 10 on Garfield’s 16. Eldredge went over right guard for two yards. Eldredge slipped through the same spot for five more and once again it was Grembowitz who made the tackle. Eldredge skidded off right end for four yards and a first down on the Garfield five.
Eldredge scooted off left guard to the Boilermaker two-yard marker. Tripoli made the tackle. Eldredge started off right tackle, cut back in slightly through guard to tally. Barnes replaced Wilson but instead of kicking, Red Mathews tried to burrow into the Garfield first defense but was stopped short of the added point and Garfield still led, 13-6.
Barnes kicked off to the Garfield five and Babula brought the apple back to the 25. Grembowitz picked up two yards at left guard then the Boilermakers were penalized 15 yards for unnecessary roughness, shoving the ball back to the 14. Babula tried to skirt left end but half the Miami line threw him for a three-yard loss. Babula’s punt wobbled 27 yards to the Garfield 38 where Grembowitz stopped Comfort in his tracks. Garfield called time out.
Eldredge scampered 11 yards around right end behind good blocking for a first down on the Garfield 26. Kazaren made the tackle. Eldredge flipped a short pass over the middle and Babula short-circuited it, returning to the N.J. 22 as the quarter ended. Babula had shortly before the play replaced Librera. The return was seven yards.
Fourth Quarter
When play resumed, Kazaren crashed through center for three yards and on the next play Babula passed eight yards to Grembowitz, giving Garfield a first down on the Garfield 33. Babula tried another aerial but Gilbert Wilson, Miami guard, intercepted it and behind good blocking went 40 yards for a touchdown. The play was nullified, however, when an alert official spotted a Miami lineman offside and the Stingarees were penalized five yards. It was first and eight for the Garfield lads on their own 37.
Babula faiiled to gain on an end skirt and Kazaren plunged through center for three yards and it was third and one. Hampered by the heat, Garfield again called time out. Babula made it a first down with a two-yard gain at left guard. He faded swiftly and skied a long pass down the left side lines but Wagnesz could not quite make the catch. Grembowitz went over left tackle for two three-footers. Babula’s pass for Young was knocked down by James. Benny sailed a beautiful 54-yard punt over the Miami goal. Officials brought it back to the 20 and it was first and 10 Miami.
Eldredge jumped over tackle for two yards, Butts making the stop. With four mates running in front of him, Eldredge skipped around left end, eluded two Garfield tacklers, had another pair of Boilermakers cut down by the interference and then pulled into the clear as the procession reached the 50-yard line. With no one between him and the goal, L’il David was a cinch. With every stride he pulled away from the gallant Garfield pursuers to score.
The run was good for 77 yards.
Barnes sailed the placement kick through the uprights and with minutes left to play the score read: Garfield 13, Miami 13.
Barnes kicked off to the Boilermakers’ 13 and Babula sprinted back 31 yards to the Garfield 46. Babula got three at left tackle then found three at right tackle. Babula passed to Young who lateraled to Kazaren to give Garfield six yards and a first down on the Miami 42. Benny passes one yard to Butts. On the same reverse play that scored Garfield’s second touchdown, Grembowitz raced 27 yards around left end before being knocked out of bounds on the Miami 15 by Comfort.
On second down, Babula went around right end for two yards. Babula’s pass for Wagnesz across the goal line was incomplete. Babula hit left tackle for only two yards, bringing the ball to the Miami 10. Then, on fourth down, Babula dropped back and booted a perfect field goal through the posts and New Jersey led, 16-13. Benny kicked from the 22.
Only a few minutes remained and Eldredge returnd to Miami’s lineup. Babula kicked out of bounds on the Miami 17 and the ball came out to the 35.
Eldredge failed to gain at left tackle. Eldredge’s intended pass for Brown was knocked down by Kazaren. On a fake pass, Eldredge went six yards to the 41. One minute remained in the game. Comfort slashed around left end for a first down on the Garfield 49.
Eldredge’s pass was intercepted by Kazaren and he returned to the 50. Garfield called time out. The fans began filing out of the gray steel stands. Babula carried two Stingaree tacklers 12 yards for a first down on the Boilermakers’ 38. Babula’s line plunge added one. Running slow and easy, Babula was stopped as the game ended.
Final score: Garfield 16, Miami 13.
