Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. ~Psalms 19:14
“Watch your mouth!” is an expression I heard frequently from adults during my developmental years. However, did you know that the average person says around 16,000 words in a day? Wow! That is a lot of words to watch out for.
Sixteen thousand words give us many opportunities to empower and inspire someone. At the same time, there are several opportunities to stir up hatred and violence as well. In other words, we have plenty of chances to use our words for either good or evil.
Many times, we forget that words have real power. God spoke the world into existence by the authority of His words, and since we are created in His image, our words have power too. Nonetheless, from time to time, we say things without first thinking about them, and many of us pay the price for doing so. We need to understand that the words that we say out of our mouths do take on a life of their own.
Think about the words spoken to you by your parents, your friends, and your enemies. Did those words have an impact on your life?
God has given us many forewarnings throughout the Bible that tell us that our words play a very vital role in our lives. In the book of Proverbs, King Solomon wrote, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). Jesus declares in Matthew 12:37, “for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
The Bible tells us that our tongue has the authority to direct where our life will take us.
“Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.” (James 3:4-5)
If we lose control of our tongue and do not select our words wisely, our life is going to be impacted and taken off course, just as a ship is steered off course. In other words:
Your future is set in motion by your words, so affirm positive words to enrich your life positively.
No matter what is going on in your life today, it is time for you to “watch your mouth!” The next time you find yourself speaking words of disbelief and uncertainty, build yourself up by faith. Begin declaring God’s truths over your life. Speak faith-filled words about your future because there is a miracle in your mouth. Stop talking about the problem and start talking about the solution. Start speaking words of victory not defeat!
P.S. Do not listen to negative people; instead, encourage yourself and speak LIFE over yourself!

Say this prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father:
Today I ask You to help me seek Your wisdom and words of healing when I am dealing with a problem. Guide me to make decisions and give guidance to others with words that edify, and words that honor You. In Jesus name, I pray, Amen.
