Conclusion

The fashion wheel never has nor ever will stop turning. The 1980s gave us an economic boom which allowed women willingly to express themselves once more with pseudo-Georgian ‘big hair’ and the shoulder pads of ‘power dressing’, while the 1990s and ‘Noughties’ saw women come back down to earth in a backlash of elegance. Where our third millennia of fashion will take us is an adventure about to unfold. What is almost certain is that women will no longer be, in the words of Mrs Gresswell in 1926, ‘compelled – by law, custom, convention and so forth’ to be defined solely by her clothes.
