Gary Johnson is the 2016 Libertarian Party presidential nominee. A successful businessman before seeking elected office, Johnson started a door-to-door handyman business to help pay his way through college. Twenty years later, he had grown that business into one of the largest construction companies in New Mexico, with more than 1,000 employees. In 1994 Johnson was elected governor of New Mexico, running as a Republican in an overwhelmingly Democratic state. Johnson financed his primary election campaign with his own funds, won the nomination, and was elected. He was reelected in 1998. An avid skier, adventurer, and bicyclist, he has scaled the highest peak on each of the seven continents, including Mount Everest. Governor Johnson has two grown children—a daughter, Seah, and a son, Erik—and recently became a grandfather. He currently resides in a house he built himself in Taos, New Mexico. He is engaged to his best friend of eight years, Kate Prusack.
