I am indebted to the US Navy’s History and Heritage Division; E. B. Sledge’s memoir on the Peleliu and Okinawa invasions, titled With the Old Breed, published in 1981; Chuck Tatum’s book on the battle for Iwo Jima, titled Red Blood, Black Sand, published in 2012; Hal Buell’s book about the Iwo Jima campaign, titled Uncommon Valor, Common Virtue, published in 2006; and the West Point Atlas of War: The Pacific, edited by Brigadier General V. J. Esposito, published in 1959. Several YouTube videos about this battle also gave me a good idea of what the terrain actually looked like and the extent of the hardships suffered by the Marines, some of whom describe what it was like in these videos because they were there. As usual, I thought I knew a little bit about what happened at Iwo, but, again, as usual, I discovered that I knew next to nothing. I am grateful to have had the above books and the YouTube videos to explore.
