A Butterfly for V’Ann Cornelius

“The V’Ann”

Named for the late V’Ann Cornelius, folder and origami art curator responsible for art exhibitions at numerous origami conventions, and at the Mingei Museum in San Diego, California; Hangar Ten in Salzburg, Austria; and for several other shows and exhibits.

“The V’Ann” loves to put on a show. She will direct the talent, and expertly determine what goes where, how, and when. Her x-ray vision sees inner beauty, besides knowing which is the best side to display. She makes sure the exhibits are spotless, adjusts the lights, raises the pedestal, and places the freshest flowers at either side.

This design will introduce color-change flaps for the top paper.

1. Fold up to the “Origamido Butterfly Base” (step 10) of the Origamido Butterfly project (page 82). Open the top layers of the hind-wings and squash-fold the outer corners, forming triangular pockets.

2. Valley-fold and unfold the raw edges of the hindwings, making a crease that spans from the interior center of each wing down to the bottom corners of the triangle pockets.

3. Valley-fold the bottom edges of the hind-wings to the crease, and then valley-fold the resulting flap over, on top of each hindwing.

4. Move the leading edges of the forewings down and crimp the middle of the wings, forming the overlap.

5. Mountain-fold the raw edge of top layer of each forewing behind.

6. Inside-reverse-fold the indicated corners. Mountain-fold the free corner behind.

7. Mountain- and valley-fold the abdomen over the right wing. Notice the angle of the fold line.

8. Valley-fold the wings to match. Open the wings out to each side of the body.

9. (A) Squash-fold the paper for the head. (B) Inside-reverse-fold the indicated corners. (C) Turn the model over, left to right.

10. (A) Valley-fold the top edges down. (B) Turn the model over, left to right. Open the wings.
