CHAPTER 13

 

 

I woke up in a soft bed with the sounds of beeping going on around me. Groaning I slowly peeled my eyes open just to slam them back shut due to the brightness of the room.

“Oh, shit, sorry” I heard a rough male voice say as he moved around the room. “It's ok, I closed the blinds for you. You can open your eyes now.” It was Jonah's voice I was hearing. That revelation almost made me keep my eyes shut. I didn't want to see him, not like this. Not when I know I lost the fight. But instead of keeping my eyes closed I slowly opened them blinked and looked over to where Jonah was sitting in a chair by the bed.

“Where am I?” I asked with a scratchy voice.

“In the infirmary” He answered.

“How long have I been here?”

“Two days” He said. Two days! I must have hit that tree pretty damn hard to be out cold for two whole days. I took a good look at Jonah. He was slouched over in the chair resting his elbows on his knees. He looked like he hadn't slept for the two days that I've been in here. His hair was limp and his clothes were dirty and looked like he hasn't changed them since the fight. As a matter of fact those are the same clothes he had on for the fight. He was also sporting a black eye and had cuts and bruises all over his face.

“You look like shit” I said to him. He looked up at me with a small smile.

“I feel like shit” He said.

“What are your injuries?” I asked.

“Black eye, broken nose, dislocated shoulder, bruised ribs, and a dislocated knee” He said with that small smile again. “You did a number on me”

“Good” I said. That caused his smile to drop.

“I should get the doctor” He said after a beat getting up and limping out the door. Moments later an elderly man walked in with Jonah following close behind him.

“Good Morning Alex! I'm Dr. Morrison, the pack doctor. How are you feeling?” He asked coming up to the side of the bed. Jonah had sat back down in the chair on the other side of the bed giving the doc space.

“I'm fine doc. Just a little sore.” I said smiling up at him.

“Well you definitely took a good beating” He said looking over at Jonah with disapproval out of the side of his eye. I liked the doc already.

“What are my injuries?” I asked.

“Well, you hit your head pretty hard on that tree. You also broke a few ribs and had a few cuts that needed mending. Good thing you are a wolf or it would have taken months for these injuries to heal instead of weeks. I would like to keep you here for a few more days before.......

“Where is she? Alex! Are you okay?” Celeste screamed as she stormed into the room busting the door open and scaring the daylights out of myself, Jonah and the doctor. I rolled my eyes when I saw her and her dramatic entrance.

“I'm fine Celeste” I said sitting up in the bed.

“Fine! Look at you. You look horrible!” She said pushing the doctor out of the way and grabbing my bandage hand.

“Thanks, Celeste!” I said in response.

“Well it's true! Phil doesn't she look horrible?” She asked Alpha Phil who had quietly followed Celeste into the room and was leaning on the wall by the window.

“She's healing love. Why don't you move out of the way so that the doctor can finish his job.” He said reaching out for Celeste. She didn't move.

“Celeste, the doctor needs to finish with her.” Jonah said when she didn't move. Celeste slowly looked over at Jonah with an evil look on her face.

“You don't get to tell me what to do. You did this to her” She said with a low growl. Alpha Phil pushed off the wall.

“Love let's give Alex some room” He said calmly. His request went unnoticed.

“Are you happy now. You got what you wanted.” She said glaring at Jonah. Jonah did not respond but you can see his jaw clinching. “You have nothing to say for yourself? You hurt her! You hurt my best friend. You could have killed her” Dramatic Celeste.

“It's okay Celeste” I said patting her hand, trying to calm her down. You could see that she was getting more and more worked up over Jonah's silence. She didn't look at me but at him as she was visibly shaking in her skin. I knew she was within seconds of totally losing it and shifting.

“I'm sorry, I didn't mean for it to end this way.” Jonah said quietly.

“Didn't mean for it to end this way! How else did you think it was going to end when you challenged her?” She asked. She was met with silence. And that is when she snapped. She jumped over me and slammed into Jonah knocking them both against the window and down to the ground. Jonah didn't fight back as Celeste rained down blow after blow to Jonah's pretty face. He just laid there and took the punishment. Alpha Phil and the Dr. Morrison both had some trouble pulling her off of him. She was holding on to Jonah’s shirt and I could hear it ripping as she was being pulled away. This would have been comical to watch, little ole' Celeste beat down a big bad Alpha. But it hurt my ribs too much to laugh so I sat there with a little smile on my lips.

When it comes to Celeste and myself people always thought that I would be the most aggressive of the two. But they would be wrong. Celeste was a beast! A loyal beast that would kill for me if she felt I was in any type of danger. Luckily for her and others it doesn't happen often because I can take care of myself, but she is just as protective of me as I am of her. So it was no surprise to see her react like she is. I'm just surprised it didn't happen sooner.

Alpha Phil and the doctor succeeded in getting Celeste off of Jonah and out the door with threats of killing him being yelled in her wake. Jonah stood up and wiped the blood off of his bleeding mouth. He didn't look mad but I could tell he was upset about the whole ordeal.

“I'm sorry about that” I said as Jonah went to sitting back down in the chair that was turned over during the shuffle.

“It's ok, I deserved that I guess” He said in response. The doctor excused himself after checking me over again. A few minutes of silence stretched over the room before he spoke again.

“When I was a young pup my mom used to tell me bed time stories. They were filled with beautiful girls and handsome boys that the moon goddess has blessed to fall in love. They would go through some challenges but in the end they would always end up together and live happily ever after. Those stories stayed with me all these years and gave me hope that I would be blessed by the moon goddess and have a beautiful mate of my own and live happily ever after. I was just about to give up hope on finding her until the night I ran into a tall and exotic wolf that fought like the best of warriors. She was beautiful and she was mine. My mate! I was beyond excited when I came to that realization. But it never occurred to me that my own mate would not want me. It made me angry and irrational and I did things that I am not proud of. I hurt her. But I thought that if I just got her attention she would realize that we belonged together”

“Yeah! Well you won, so you can do whatever you want to do with me” I said looking at him. He looked so vulnerable and small sitting in that chair with his head in his hands. He stood and walked over to the door as if to leave but turned and gave me a sad smile.

“The only thing I want to do is love you” He said and then walked out the room shutting the door softly behind him.

I laid back down and pulled the covers over my head as the tears I was so desperately holding at bay fell down my eyes. Once they started they could not stop and I curled myself into a fetal position and sobbed uncontrollably. I hurt him and I think that I have finally pushed him away for good. I thought that would make me happy but instead it did the opposite and made my heart hurt. I lost him.
