I AM NOT A HISTORIAN. And when I set out to write this book, I didn’t think it would contain much history because I thought Riley’s story would be most of what I told. As I wrote, Jack took over and the book became his. If you were to ask me, I would never admit to liking history. It’s not true, of course. A more accurate statement would be that I’ve never formally studied history. But, I love reading historical fiction. And this is a work of fiction. I’ve woven in historical details, and I’ve also taken some liberties to create my own version of history where it suited the story. I am thankful for the City of Vancouver Archives, where I spend countless online hours, and the Vancouver Police Museum, where I spent many in-person hours. I also used Robert A. J. McDonald’s Making Vancouver to better understand what life was like in this city of the western frontier.
