MY HUSBAND INSPIRED me to write this book, and for that I will always be thankful. For years I skirted around the edges of the idea of writing a book. When he started graduate school and came home so passionate and inspired after spending time doing something he loved, I decided I wanted to be equally inspired. So, I signed up for a four-session introduction to fiction course offered by a local university’s continuing education program. And the germ of this book came during that course. From there, I was accepted into the year-long Writer’s Studio creative writing program at Simon Fraser University, where I workshopped this book. Through it all, he cheered me on.
I owe thanks to the other writers in Hiromi Goto’s cohort of The Writer’s Studio 2015, who offered me feedback and encouragement, and it is through the Studio that I met my talented editor, Janet Fretter. Janet, your firm but supportive guidance has been invaluable, and I look forward to building on that for the next book. I cannot thank you enough. I would also be remiss for not acknowledging my eagle-eyed proofreader, Shelley Hudson. Any typos and errant commas are my own.
To early readers David Alexander and Rebecca Stephen, thank you for providing your thoughts and suggestions. They strengthened the story.
Finally, to my parents, who patiently waited for me to say my book was ready without ever pressuring me to see it. I’m fortunate to have been raised by such wonderful people.
