Ingliss

SPOKEN BY

Ingliss is spoken by the people in the Maurai Federation, which is located in the Pacific.

DOCUMENTED BY

Poul Anderson (1926–2001) made up three languages in Orion Shall Rise (1983): Angley, Ingliss, and Unglish. While each of the languages is rooted in English, each is nearly indecipherable to the speakers of the other two languages, owing to ways the languages developed over centuries of separation.

BEHIND THE WORDS

Several hundred years after a nuclear war, people—and nations—still have to find ways to deal with each other.

DERIVATION OF THE LANGUAGE

Ingliss is derived from English and Polynesian.

PHILOLOGICAL FACT

imageAlthough Anderson began as a liberal, he moved steadily to the right and concluded by embracing libertarianism. Throughout this evolution, though, he was a strong advocate for space travel and exploration, arguing that to abandon this meant that humanity was doomed to a future in which resources and cultural advancement would steadily shrink.
