Bogbean

Menyanthes trifoliata

SIZE AND DESCRIPTION

Aquatic plant 12–35cm tall. Leaves are divided into groups of three leaflets and held above the water’s surface. Flowers are pink and white with fringed petals, and borne in spikes. Also called Bitterwort, Bog Hop and Water Trefoil.

DISTRIBUTION

Native to still water and bogs across most of the temperate northern hemisphere.

USES

Used for flavouring ales and other alcoholic drinks. Traditional tonic and purging herb, the leaves and rhizome containing bitter compounds similar to those in gentians. Recommended for various complaints, stimulating the appetite, but may cause vomiting in large doses.
