I like to watch dogs lick the ears
of kittens, pigs protecting lambs,
baby squirrels being nursed by a cat.
Orphan animals being raised by mothers
of a different species makes me feel calm,
safe, makes me wish I was an animal, too,
a little white poodle being raised
by a heavyset kangaroo. Of course, I am
an animal, but the kind who makes things
complicated, wears deodorant, watches the news.
Though I’ve licked the ears of other mammals
I didn’t love doing it like these boxers and goats.
I envy the relationship the baboon and bush baby
have. Even when no one’s looking
they’re nice to one another. I’m disguised
as a rescue hoping to be found in an alley.
I have no words, just the scent of my desire.
I am ready to be anybody’s animal.
