SLIB

Sounds like another word
for stone: that hard wall you hit
when you dig up your garden,
or the word for what might crawl
out from under the moist soil; or
Slib: noun, the hardened gristle
on an overcooked steak.
But slib is the Czech word
for promise—vow, pledge
sounds so glib, for something
so serious, but promises, we say,
are made to be broken
and maybe over there it’s really
true: I slib to love you forever;
I slib to always stay. In Bohemia
our slib is our word.
Have a nice day.
