EPILOGUE

When Luke woke, Maggie was still asleep next to him. Checking his phone, he saw it was near noon. Careful not to wake her, he slid out of bed, shut the door to the bedroom behind him, and called in an order for room service. While he waited for his order to arrive, he sank into the armchair and opened his phone to find out what was going on. Mostly, it was simple messages from his friends telling him to check in once he was up. He held off on sending any kind of message, planning on waiting until Maggie was up. He didn’t want to rouse her earlier than she wanted to be out of bed.

Thirty minutes later, a knock on the door alerted him to the arrival of his room service. He let the server in so he could arrange their breakfast on the table. When the server rolled out the cart and Luke closed the door, he turned to see a nude Maggie standing in the doorway.

“You ordered room service? That was sweet of you.” Maggie strode forward.

Luke had trouble keeping his eyes up, enjoying the sway of her hips.

“Eyes up here, mister.”

He felt butterflies flutter about inside him at her soft smile and teasing eyes. When she stepped into him, he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her in for a good morning kiss.

Maggie pulled back, patting Luke’s cheek softly. “I’m going to grab a robe out of the bathroom, then we can have breakfast.”

When she returned, they set about breaking their fast. Luke, still groggy when he ordered, had only ordered a normal breakfast’s worth of food, forgetting they’d had nothing besides fries and a sandwich at lunch time about twenty-four hours earlier. When his plate was empty, he looked at it forlornly, wishing he’d ordered more.

“That’ll hold for a bit, but I think I’m going to tap into my inner hobbit and have a second breakfast,” Maggie said, picking up her coffee for a sip. She stared into her coffee cup for a while before she raised her eyes to Luke, sadness coloring her blue eyes. “Do we have to go out today? Can we just not? Can we exempt ourselves from the world? I want to spend the rest of the day in bed with you, just being. I don’t want to face everything. I just want to make love to you and disappear from the world for half a day.”

“That sounds wonderful.” He picked up his phone and texted Sam and Pablo. Is there anything that needs to happen today that can’t wait until tomorrow?

No, I don’t think so. Not that we can’t handle, Sam replied.

Go wild, we’ll see you tomorrow, Pablo texted back.

“We’re all clear,” Luke said, turning his phone to do not disturb.

Maggie smiled at him, her eyes still terribly sad. He wished he could take the pain away, but he knew she felt guilty about shooting the werewolf. They’d survived for now, but they still had a long way to go to get home. Right now, she needed to disappear and hide from the world. He needed that as well. For a few hours, they’d disappear physically and pretend the only world that existed was the two of them and their bed. They could face the world tomorrow; today, they had each other.
