Il 15 settembre del 1985, alle due e cinquanta della notte, il venticinquenne Michael Stewart venne arrestato perché disegnava graffiti sulla metropolitana e per possesso di un mozzicone di spinello. Dagli atti della Polizia risulta che Stewart oppose resistenza, e quindi venne ammanettato. Un testimone disse di avere visto la Polizia buttarlo per terra e picchiarlo. Mentre veniva portato al Distretto di Polizia Stewart iniziò a prendere a calci i poliziotti che gli legarono le gambe. Alle tre e ventidue di quella stessa notte i poliziotti lo accompagnarono al Bellevue Hospital Center, in coma, ammanettato e con le gambe legate. Stewart morì dopo un paio di settimane in seguito a una lesione alla spina dorsale. In sua memoria Basquiat dipinse The Death of Michael Stewart, 1983, Acrilico e pennarello su tavola, 63,5x77,5cm, Collezione Nina Clemente, in Emmerling, op. cit., p. 83, ndt.
