“If someone doesn’t come out here very soon and tell me how my girl is doing, I'm gonna lose my shit! What the fuck is taking so long?” I angrily grumble to Tyson, who’s sitting next to me in the emergency waiting room.
My leg bounces incessantly while time slowly ticks by. I need to see her. She has to be okay. If I lose Emmy, what else do I have to live for? Nothing, because she's my whole world. My everything. I already lost her once. There's no way I could possibly do that again.
Seeing her tied to that chair, bloody and bruised shattered my heart. I genuinely enjoyed shooting that psychotic cunt in the head. If it wasn’t for the fact that Emmy was bleeding out and dying, I would have shot her a few more times, just for the fun of it.
I failed her, again. I made a promise that I'd always protect her, but so far I've been nothing but a useless coward. Fuck, at this point she may just be better off without me. Everyone who's caused her pain this year, did so because of me in some way. Maybe her coming to Emerald Lake Prep was the worst thing that could have happened to her.
No, that's not right. She’s made Talon, Ben, and Charlie's lives all the more better. She’s made mine better too, but at least none of them were the source of her pain.
“Chill out, man, they're just doing their job. They already told you they were taking her in for surgery and probably a blood transfusion. That stuff takes time.”
I look at him with an irritated stare. “Chill out?! Are you fucking kidding me?! How do you expect me to be calm when my whole world is in there, lying on an operating table and fighting for her life, and I can’t even be there next to her?!” I shout, getting the attention of the whole room.
Tyson and I are both in clean clothes now. It was painful to hand her over to the EMTs and not go with her, but we had to go back and help with the clean up before the police got there. The last thing we need is being arrested for murder. As Tyson and I focused on getting to Emmy, my father and his men made sure no one interfered.
We gave the 911 operator the address to the building next to the one we were in, that way my father's men would have enough time to dispose of the bodies and clean up, before anyone started investigating surrounding areas.
When we arrived at the hospital, we told the officers that she wasn't picking up her phone. So we went over to her house to check on her, and when we got there, the place looked broken into. When we couldn't find her, we tracked her phone.
One of my father’s men brought her phone from her house and left it in the warehouse to line up with our stories.
Hearing a soft cry, I look over and see Rick hugging a distraught Amy. They arrived not long after we did. I can see how much they love Emmy, and I'm so glad she has them in her life. She deserves to experience adults who love and care for her.
Video calling the guys and Charlie was hard. It took everything in me not to break down as I had to explain the events of the night to them. Thankfully, they were all together and hanging out at Ben’s house, because I don't think I would have had it in me to have to tell it more than once.
I watched while Ben’s father had to force him and Talon not to come racing over here as Ben’s mother held Charlie while she cried. Then Ben broke down, and his father and Talon had to hold him to keep him from collapsing onto the floor. Their hearts all shattered right along with mine.
They are on their way here now. I just hope that, by the time they get here, I will have something good to tell them.
The doctor walks into the waiting room. I jump up out of my seat and rush to stand with Emmy’s foster parents.
“Mr. and Mrs. Moon?” the doctor asks.
“That’s us,” Amy says, wiping her nose with a tissue.
“Amelia has lost a lot of blood, but thankfully, we were able to replenish it with a blood transfusion. The blunt force trauma to her head caused a minor brain bleed, but we were also able to get to that in time. We're not out of the woods yet, but things are looking better. She’s responding to treatment and we just placed her back in the ICU. You can go in to see her soon. The nurses are just getting her room fully set up. She is not conscious at the moment, but she should be coming out of sedation soon. You must expect her to be groggy from the pain relievers we gave her, but we’ve tried to keep it to a minimum. We didn't want to do anything to risk the baby until we talked to you and Ms. Knox.”
Amy lets out a small gasp at his words.
Baby...
Did I just hear him right? Did he just say... baby?
My body is paralyzed, and my brain races to catch up with my ears on what they just heard.
“I’m sorry, doctor, but did you just say baby?” Amy asks in disbelief.
The doctor looks at her confused. “Yes, you didn't know?” he asks, and Amy shakes her head with wide eyes.
“Well, it’s a possibility that she, herself, wasn’t aware. From what the ultrasound and bloodwork show, she appears to be about six weeks along. I'm very surprised that she didn't lose the baby with all the trauma and blood loss she endured tonight. She must be a very strong and healthy young lady, and it looks like that little one is very determined to stick around,” the doctor smiles.
He keeps talking, but I don't hear anything he says. Staggering back to my seat, I start to shake as Tyson tries to talk to me, but I block him out as well. My brain is on loop, replaying his words over and over again as I stare blankly at a spot on the wall in front of me.
Pregnant... Emmy. Is. Pregnant.
I'm gonna be a dad...
WE’RE gonna be dads...
And moms?
Holy fucking shit!
