This quilt uses all 25 of the 8˝ × 8˝ blocks.
Using an unexpected textile can really turn up the volume on your quilt.
Westside includes a number of print fabrics with metallic gold highlights. I continued the metallic theme by using metallic gold linen for the sashing.
Fabric Requirements
Yardages are based on fabric at least 42˝ wide.
■1¾ yards neutral solid for sashing
■3⅝ yards for backing
■½ yard for binding
■64˝ × 64˝ of batting
Cutting
NEUTRAL SOLID
■Cut 4 strips 4½˝ × length of fabric. Subcut:
2 border strips 4½˝ × 56½˝ each
2 border strips 4½˝ × 48½˝ each
■Cut 4 strips 2½˝ × length of fabric. Trim each strip to 2½˝ × 48½˝.
■From the remaining fabric, cut 20 strips 2½˝ × 8½˝ each.
BACKING FABRIC
■Cut 2 pieces 64˝ × width of fabric each.
BINDING FABRIC
■Cut 6 strips 2½˝ × width of fabric each.
Make the Quilt Top
All seams are sewn with a ¼˝ seam allowance and pressed open.
1. Arrange the blocks in 5 rows of 5 blocks each.
2. Sew the blocks in each row together, sewing 2½˝ × 8½˝ sashing strips between the blocks. figure a
3. Sew the 5 rows together, sewing 2½˝ × 48½˝ sashing strips between the rows.
4. Sew a 4½˝ × 48½˝ border strip to each side of the quilt top.
5. Sew the 4½˝ × 56½˝ border strips to the top and bottom of the quilt top.
Make the Quilt Back
1. Trim away selvages. Sew together the 2 pieces along the 64˝ sides.
2. Trim the finished quilt back to 64˝ × 64˝.
NOTE
Add interest to your quilt back by making a pieced strip from your scraps and sewing it between the 2 large pieces.
Finish the Quilt
Quilt as desired. Use the 2½˝ binding strips to make and sew the binding.
I finished this quilt by free-motion quilting densely packed large, loopy flowers using my home machine.
