fresh blooms (small to medium flowers such as these purple scabiosa flowers work well)
bobby pins
scissors or garden shears
3–5 inches of florist wire and 3–5 inches of florist tape per hairpin
1: Clip the stem of the bloom, leaving approximately 2 inches from the base of the flower. Prepare to secure the flower to the bobby pin by cutting a 3- to 5-inch piece of florist wire.
2: Place the flower’s stem against the wavy side of the bobby pin and hold in place.
3: Thread the florist wire through the loop of the bobby pin, using it to secure the flower to the wavy side by wrapping the two together from top to bottom.
TIP: The flower will stay in place better if secured to the wavy side of the bobby pin because it allows the florist wire to hold on without slipping as it may on the straight side.
4: Your bobby pin should now look like this. Make sure not to wrap the bobby pin shut, but only secure the flower to one side, allowing it to open fully.
5: Cut a 3- to 5-inch piece of florist tape and prepare to use it to cover the wire-wrapped side of the bobby pin.
6: Completely wrap the wavy side of the bobby pin, including the end, with the tacky florist tape, which will stick to itself. This step will prevent the wire from pulling or scratching when placed in the hair.
7: Cut off the excess florist tape.
8: Pin the finished product into your hair as you would a regular bobby pin.
