Believing in Myself

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

~John Muir

My husband and I were on a vacation. He told me about a hidden lake that was on top of a mountain nearby. Seeing that lake was on his bucket list. The distance was 10 miles round trip, and it was rated an intermediate to difficult hike. Right away, I began to panic because I didn’t know if I had the capacity to make it. I hadn’t been exercising, and I had fallen into the mindset that because I was getting older it was only natural that I would have less energy and drive.

Early the next morning, we began our ascent. Right away, I knew this was going to be very hard. About halfway up, we met a discouraged couple who had given up trying to reach the lake. I noticed how disappointed the husband seemed to be, and I determined right then that I would continue no matter what.

Strangely, as we walked, I stopped thinking about not being able to endure the walking. Instead, I began to enjoy the beauty of the area and our conversation. What I had considered to be an unattainable goal had become a source of fulfillment.

As the day progressed and the trail became more challenging, I could sense that my husband was growing concerned about our timing. We had to get off that mountain before dark, or we would have to find refuge from the cold and the many animals in the area.

At last, we reached the top. The hidden lake was enchanting. Birds were singing and flitting from tree to tree as if they were welcoming us. The tranquility of the water was overwhelmingly serene. Too soon, it was time to depart, because we had to make it down before nightfall. We didn’t even have time to rest on the way down. We did it, and we were safely in the truck heading back to our campsite while it was still light.

Over the next few days, I noticed that my perception of myself began to change. I realized that I could do many things that I had been fearful to do. I also made the decision to exercise every day so that I could stay healthy and strong. There are so many things that I want to do and places I would like to see. I am excited to know that many adventures are in store for me now that I have my new attitude. I intend to enjoy life to the fullest!
