Author’s Note

This book is totally nonfiction. Nothing has been made up. The events happened, and they are recounted here as accurately and faithfully as it is within the ability of the author to do so. No names have been changed. Conversations and quotes are taken from the recollections of law-enforcement officers; other participants who were interviewed by the author; journalists and other news sources; statements in legal files; or testimony from court proceedings. In cases where accounts or recollections conflict with each other, I have used the story that is most plausible or presented both, while pointing out the sources so the reader can decide for him- or herself. In a few instances, accounts are given slightly out of chronological order for the purposes of smoothing out the narrative and making the story more readable.
