Wednesday 5 March

Someone said yesterday that, as yet, the only people to have profited from the revolution are florists and candlemakers. The Maidan and Institutskaya Street are piled high with bouquets of flowers left in memory of the victims. In every church, the number of candles being burned is a hundred times higher than normal. It’s so that God can see clearly what is happening in Ukraine.

Can hatred act as a glue for the nation? Can it stop the country cracking up any further? I doubt it.

Second morning without war. But also without peace. The world is gathered around Ukraine, as around a sick child. They are trying to save it, to bring it back to life. But the number of cancerous cells in its system is now at a critical level. Not yet fatal, thank God.
