America welcomed the von Trapps. The family loved America’s freedom and diversity. No one minded their Austrian accents and clothes. People were friendly. The public was interested in the von Trapps’ music and their lives at home in Philadelphia.
On tour Mother arranged trips to museums and national parks, where the family learned about America. They visited historic places and even sang at The White House.
Everyone in the family learned English. American folk songs were added to the concerts. While the family traveled, Rosmarie and Eleonore attended boarding school. They learned English quickly. A crib was set up for Johannes in the bus. He was surrounded by singing.
America entered World War II in December, 1941. The news came to the von Trapps during a concert. Mother announced the war news to a shocked audience. Together the family and their audience sang “My Country ’tis of Thee.”
