When Johannes was four, he started skiing with his family over the snowy Vermont hills. After long concert tours, he was happy to come back to the Green Mountains. He explored every trail around the Trapp Family Lodge. When Johannes was in college, friends joined him in cross-country skiing through the woods. He also introduced Lodge guests to his hobby.

“It was so much fun, I thought the public would like it,” he said. “We simply had to share this beautiful place with people.”

Johannes was trained as a forester and environmentalist. He carefully planned the ski trails, and extended them through the forest land at the Lodge.

The Trapp Family Lodge became America’s first cross-country ski center. Now there are 28 groomed trails and 62 miles of back country trails. On winter days, hundreds of skiers wind through the woodland trails of the von Trapp land.
