  1. While the group of Roma worked hard to undermine Germany from the shadows, they did little to directly help other Roma in concentration camps. Did they make the right decision in choosing to flee from Germany and work for Soviet Russia, or should they have stayed in their homeland and directly helped their people?
  2. Anastasia fully supported the group having children, even in the midst of a crazy world. Did you agree or disagree with her?
  3. Throughout the book, Drina expressed jealousy toward the other women in Tobor’s life. Did you think this jealousy was justified?
  4. Did you find the characters and their actions believable? Were there times you were surprised by the characters’ actions or thought they should have behaved in a different way?
  5. In the last chapter, Simza was distraught to learn that she would be separated from her brothers. Anastasia found her sorrow to be selfish and unpatriotic. Did you agree with Anastasia, or did you sympathize with Simza?
  6. What was your favorite scene in the book, and why did you choose this scene?
  7. At the end of the book, Tobor said that he now hated and feared all Germans, even though he had been born a German himself. Do you believe Tobor can slowly come to “put a boundary” on his hate, as he stated, or are the wounds inflicted by Germany too deep to heal?
  8. How did the characters grow and change throughout the book? Was there one character in particular that stuck out to you in terms of their development?
  9. The Hierophant card played an important role in the course of the story. Did you agree with the characters’ interpretation of the card, or did you form your own thoughts on its symbolism?
  10. Despite all the struggles they faced, the Roma families managed to keep their lives together and continue their traditions. Were you surprised or impressed by their resilience and ability to survive in such a harsh world?
