With slightly heavier dishes of meat – steak or chicken – accompanied by, for example, grilled vegetables and a rich sauce, hoppy, sweet India pale ales or brown ales with a lot of body are a really good match. Try, for example, Mikkeller’s ‘Green Gold’, ‘Jackie Brown’ or ‘American Dream’. The latter is especially good with chicken with lighter accompaniments such as salad.
Remember that the more fatty the meat, the more bitter the beer should be because taste wise the bitterness helps to cut through the fat. Beef with strong, dark sauces can also be accompanied by stout or porter – the sweeter the sauce, the more sweetness the beer can have. Mikkeller’s ‘Milk Stout’ is a good option here
