As I thought about my final comments for this book, the second-to-the-last verse in Ecclesiastes came to mind. Solomon had made choices and tried many different things in life, and not all of them were good. In this book of the Bible, he is giving advice to us, and much of it has been gained by costly and painful experience. I think it is wise to listen to those who have gone before us and have learned by experience the right and wrong choices to make.
All has been heard; the end of the matter is: Fear God [revere and worship Him, knowing that He is] and keep His commandments, for this is the whole of man [the full, original purpose of his creation, the object of God’s providence, the root of character, the foundation of all happiness, the adjustment of all inharmonious circumstances and conditions under the sun] and the whole [duty] for every man.
Ecclesiastes 12:13
This verse of Scripture can be very impactful if you take your time and digest it slowly, meditating on each part thoroughly. So I think my final comment is a paraphrase of what Solomon said. The end of the matter and the conclusion of all that I have written is this: Live your life “on purpose” for a purpose, and with God’s help, use the free will He has given you to choose His will! As you do so, it will honor Him greatly, and you will enjoy a satisfying reward!
