The players featured in these pages have donated their time and kitchen know-how to raise awareness for an important cause: the fight against prostate cancer. A diagnosis doesn’t just affect blokes; it also has a devastating impact on families and loved ones. It’s the most common cancer in Australian men, and each year in Australia 20,000 men are diagnosed and 3,300 die as a direct result of the disease. That is slightly greater than the number of women who are diagnosed with and die from breast cancer. So it has never been more important for everyone to learn more about prostate cancer and the things you can do to help protect yourself.
In the early stages, when prostate cancer is more likely to be curable, there are often no symptoms. This is why men aged 50 and over, or 40 if there is a family history of prostate cancer, should not wait for symptoms to appear. They should talk to their doctor about being tested as part of their annual health check-up. It’s a simple step that could save a bloke’s life.
A healthy diet and active lifestyle may help you to maintain a healthy prostate. Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) recommends that men exercise regularly, consume alcohol responsibly and enjoy a balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and lean red meat in moderation.
PCFA is the peak national body for prostate cancer in Australia. We are leading the fight against the disease by raising awareness, supporting men and their families affected by prostate cancer, and funding world-class Australian research.
