I didn’t mean to write this story at this time. I actually have two other books that were in line to be written before this one (yes, I know … Ringo!). But then COVID-19 turned the world upside down and now “normal” looks different in many big ways and a million tiny ways that none of us could have predicted about the world or about ourselves.
The book I was supposed to finish first is a romantic comedy, and my humor is more gallows than guffaws at the moment, so there were crickets where those voices used to be. Then I made the decision to put the entire Immortal Descendants series into kindle unlimited, and that seemed to want a little celebration to go with the occasion. In plotting that celebration, I imagined who Poe would encounter in present-day Baltimore. Ren’s voice began tell me her story, and a whole new avenue for exploring all the little ways this time is impacting me, personally, became possible.
That being said, there is not a chance in the world that I could or would have written Ren’s story without my brilliant editor and dear friend, Angela Houle. I gush about her a lot, and I’m not going to hold back this time either. I am one of those people who can absolutely take criticism, but please, please tell me what works too so I don’t crawl away and hide my head under the covers. Angela delivers the perfect sh*& sandwich, with the crusts cut off and pretty garnishes, and I trust her with everything I write.
The other people without whom this story could not have been written are my husband, Ed, for his brilliant research, cover design, and constant, unrelenting support, and my friends: Rose, for her unflinching honesty, Korrie, for her excellent advice, and Rebecca, for her clear gaze and direct questions. Special thanks also goes to Nicole, for her generosity, Amber, for her bravery, Dan, for his honesty, Janella, for her wisdom, and my kids, for their self-sufficiency.
And to the women and men of Kick-Ass Heroines (my reader group on Facebook ~ come join us) – your support and laughter, the dad jokes and book recs, the empowering posts about people doing wonderful things – you are just THE BEST. Thank you!
And finally, thank YOU for reading this strange story written in a strange time. I hope your new normal includes hugs from someone you care about, and conversations about things that inspire you. And until the next time we connect, please be well, and stay safe.
Love,
