EXPLORING YOUR BREATH

Before you begin to explore the breathing exercises in this book, it is useful to understand how your respiratory system actually works. On the following pages you will learn about its anatomy – its physical structure – and its physiology – what happens when air passes into your lungs and out again. There are also exercises to help you check whether you are using your lungs and nasal passages to their best advantage.

The chapter then takes you deeper into the art of breathing as it reveals the anatomy of your subtle energy system and explains how physical breathing exercises manipulate the five energies within your body, collectively known in Indian yoga philosophy as prana. There are practical exercises here, too, to cleanse your energy system. After reading this chapter you will gain an understanding of how your breath underpins your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, and be equipped with the tools to begin changing any unhealthy patterns.
