Philip Corbet acquired a fascination and deep affection for dragonflies as an undergraduate exploring the Berkshire countryside. This led to his studying the seasonal ecology of dragonflies for the Phd Degree at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge. He co-authored the first New Naturalist volume on dragonflies with Cynthia Longfield and Norman Moore in 1960. Until 1971 his career, pursued in Uganda and Canada, lay in research and research management – in freshwater biology, medical entomology and crop protection. After that, in Canada, New Zealand and Scotland, he held university chairs in biology, resource management and zoology. In 1983 he became the foundation President of the British Dragonfly Society with which he was closely involved during its formative years. In retirement, he lives in west Cornwall, where a pond and stream in his garden harbour at least a dozen species of dragonfly.
Stephen Brooks has worked in the Department of Entomology at The Natural History Museum, London, since 1979. He is author of the Field Guide to the Dragonflies and Damselflies of Great Britain and Ireland and has written many scientific articles on dragonflies. He is a member of the British Dragonfly Society and has been editor of the BDS Journal and a member of the BDS Conservation Group. His research into dragonflies has taken him to Central America, southern and western Africa and much of Europe.
