The hallway
The hallway is the space that creates the first impression of a home, so it’s bound to influence the overall experience. I’ve recently been spending some time in Portugal – for work and study – and over there in Europe’s western outpost, they have a tradition of filling the hallway with plants in order to welcome guests. That’s a tradition I can get behind!
The hallway has both a practical and an aesthetic function. This is where outdoor clothing and shoes belong, while at the same time inviting you into the rest of the house. To my mind, hanging pots are always ideal for hallways. That way you make the most of the available height while freeing up valuable floor space. Maybe try a golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum), an ivy (Hedera) or a waxplant (Hoya). These are plants that can tolerate a little neglect and low light levels and put up with a draught from an open front door.
