Avocado plant Persea americana

This is a classic with the grow-it-yourself crowd! But to avoid disappointment, you shouldn’t expect an avocado tree grown from a stone to produce fruit, as this takes at least five years in ideal conditions. But imagine the satisfaction of being able to look at an avocado plant that you’ve grown yourself while tucking into your Friday taco!

Image LIGHT

This plant welcomes a sunny spot, and even a sheltered location outdoors during the summer.

Image WATERING

It likes plenty of water – try not to let the soil dry out. Keep the soil moist at all times, but beware: yellow leaves are a sign of over-watering.

Image SOIL

Use potting compost with a layer of leca balls at the bottom. You can also mix a few leca balls into the soil for a little extra drainage.

Image FEEDING

Apply liquid organic plant food once or twice a month during the growing season.

Image ORIGIN

The avocado probably originated from Mexico, though there is some scholarly debate on the subject.

Image MISCELLANEOUS

Ever bought an unripe avocado from the shop? You can speed up the ripening process by putting it in a paper bag with a ripe banana. The plant is mildly toxic to pets.
