If you’re looking for a loyal, friendly giant to add to your collection, this is the one to go for! The umbrella plant can reach 2.5m (8ft) tall or more and has modest needs, requiring only minimal care. It can even cope with temperatures down to 0°C (32°F) if accidently left outside in a sheltered spot. A perfect plant for forgetful owners.
LIGHT
The umbrella plant likes as much light as possible, but avoid direct sunlight. During the winter, it may lose some leaves, but not too many if it has good light conditions.
WATERING
It is happy to dry out between waterings. Give it a good soaking once the soil has completely dried out.
SOIL
Use normal potting compost with a layer of leca balls in the bottom. You can also mix leca balls in with the soil for really good drainage.
FEEDING
It needs little feeding, but give it some liquid organic plant food once a month throughout the growing season.
ORIGIN
The umbrella plant is native to Taiwan, where it can grow up to 10m (33ft) tall in the wild.
MISCELLANEOUS
It is one of the easiest plants to propagate. Either cut off the entire top, or just take a branch. Leave this in water in a clear bottle or a glass until you can see roots forming, then pot it up in compost. You can also try potting up a branch directly, as this will often root successfully. The plant is mildly toxic to people and pets. The sap in the stems and leaves can cause skin irritation.
