Chapter 10
German for
Business
Knowing some German business vocabulary can come in handy, particularly if you plan to work in Germany or deal with people who do. This chapter will provide you with words and phrases about professions, work situations, office equipment, banking, changing money, and school.
Jobs and Professions
Most nouns that describe professions have a masculine and feminine form that are identical except for the feminine –in ending, for example der Lehrer/die Lehrerin (teacher). Where the masculine and feminine in the following lists are identical, the feminine will be identified by the ending –in. If the feminine form is different from the masculine, the entire word will be provided for you.

On the Phone
Speaking on the phone in a foreign language is a daunting experience. Not being able to see the person you’re speaking to seems to make comprehension that much more difficult. Just do your best. When someone answers the phone, he or she is most likely to say hallo (hah LOE). But many answer with a last name such as Keller (“Keller speaking”). The following phrases will help you through your calls.

Question?
Are there other places besides a bank where I can change money?
There are usually money exchange offices at border crossings, large railroad stations, and airports. They’re usually open beyond the regular hours of banks and savings banks, which is generally weekdays from 8:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. and then from 2:30 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. When looking for money exchange offices, watch for signs that say Wechselstube (VEX ell shtoo beh) or Geldwechsel (GHELT vex ell).

Fact
The German school system does not parallel the American system. In fact, there are often significant differences from state to state within Germany. However, in general German children can find themselves in a nursery school, kindergarten, a form of elementary school, a form of middle school, and a form of high school. Be careful with the vocabulary. The German word Hochschule (HOECH shoo leh) looks like it relates to “high school,” but it refers to college or university level education.
