ELLEN KELLY
I am her; she is me.
Together we share a passion
for driving in the rain,
shopping for shoes,
and old TV movies.
I know her better than myself.
Inside me
her free spirit endures,
her strong will illuminates
unresolved regrets,
her determined pride
lies hidden in words I dare not speak.
She calls me friend
but I know her boundaries.
Her public world
dances to different music,
travels down a different road,
so familiar my heart breaks.
I want to run ahead
placing roadblocks —
signs that read
Detour,
Enter at Your Own Risk,
Beware.
No Admittance.
Stop!
But the road is dark,
the edges indistinct.
Her eyes are better than mine,
so I can only go
driving in the rain and
shop for shoes,
watch old TV movies and wait.
