* Intellectual property theft, unfair trade practices, and cyber espionage were far from the only reason that the United States had a $400 billion trade deficit with China. China was a nation of savers and the United States was a nation of buyers and so some kind of significant trade deficit was going to be baked into the relationship. Also, trade deficits by themselves were not necessarily bad things since what was important was the overall health of the US economy rather than trade imbalances with particular countries that could pay much lower wages to their workers than was the case in the United States.
