INGREDIENTS
Serves 2
2 (8") soft hero rolls, split
1/4 pound Swiss cheese, sliced
1/2 pound roast pork, thinly sliced
4 slices smoked ham
2 garlicky dill pickles, very thinly sliced
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 clove garlic, minced
1. Assemble the sandwiches by lining both sides of the rolls with the sliced cheese. Then pile on the pork, ham, and pickles. Close up the sandwiches.
2. In a small bowl, mix together the butter and garlic. Brush the garlic butter on all sides of the rolls.
3. Heat a large, heavy skillet over medium-low heat and place the sandwiches in the pan. Take another heavy pan and press it on top of the sandwiches to press them down while they grill. Turn them over when one side is well browned and the cheese begins to melt, about 3–4 minutes. Grill the other side and press again to really flatten out the sandwich. Serve hot.
FINDING CUBANOS IN THE UNITED STATES
Anywhere that there is a Cuban neighborhood, you can find Cuban sandwiches, or Cubanos. The small local shops that cater to the working class are the best places to find these treats. Look for the telltale sandwich press, usually covered with aluminum foil, to tell you this treat is available. Order a Cubano with a café con leche and enjoy a truly Cuban delicacy.
