Robert L. Wood first saw the Olympics in 1946. Since then, he spent literally thousands of days exploring them, hiking the valleys, climbing the peaks, probing the wilderness. When weather forced him down from the hills, he turned to researching the history of the Olympics. He became their literary explorer by writing books such as Across the Olympic Mountains: The Press Expedition, 1889–90; Men, Mules and Mountains: Lieutenant O’Neil’s Olympic Expeditions; Trail Country: Olympic National Park, and The Land That Slept Late: The Olympic Mountains in Legend and History. Mr. Wood died in 2003 at the age of 78.
