Maltese Cross Cuff

COCO CHANEL WORE A PAIR OF JEWELED CUFFS day and night. She had a jeweler remove the stones from jewelry she’d been given over the years and gave them new life on a pair of Maltese cross cuffs. These coordinating cuffs became a part of her signature style and this look is still chic seventy years later. We updated this iconic style with brass and bright jewel tones. With a mix of royal blue, fuchsia, and amethyst stones it adds a classic vintage feel to any outfit. No need to layer on any other jewelry—just throw on a coat.

INSTRUCTIONS

1 To set the stones in the pictured layout, start from the center and work outward. Add a thin layer of glue to the back of the blue emerald-cut stone and place it in the center of the cuff. Use a small amount of glue for each stone so that you are not dripping or smearing it. If components start moving around, hold them in place with your finger or with a toothpick for a moment until the glue gets tacky and holds the stones.

2 Glue the 2 black diamond baguettes to the top and bottom of the emerald cut stone.

3 Glue the 4 light amethyst octagons to the four longest exposed sides of the central emerald cut stone and the adjacent baguettes.

4 Maneuver the 4 square crystal stones into the spaces between the baguettes and the light amethyst octagons, and glue into place.

5 Glue down the 4 fuchsia pear-shaped stones between the crystal and the light amethyst stones on the top and bottom of the arrangement, pointed-side out.

6 Glue the 4 black diamond marquise stones in the space between the light amethyst octagons and the crystal squares on the sides of the arrangement.

7 Glue the crystal marquise stones in the space between the black diamond marquise stones.

8 Finally, glue the 2 jet pear-shaped stones facing outward on the far sides of the arrangement. These two stones may need to be held in place for a moment while the glue dries, since they are on the side of the cuff. Wait at least 24 hours for the glue to fully dry before wearing.
