Chapter 20. The Unchristened Priest

In Cremona, it happened that a respectable woman bore a child outside of marriage, and as she feared the ugly talk she gave the child to a handmaiden and ordered her to leave him on the door of the church.

Another respected woman found the child, took pity on him and raised him as her own. The boy was sent to school and proved himself to be gifted and studious. As soon as his age allowed, he was consecrated and became a priest. Soon after, he died.

At that same time the story of his childhood became known and it turned out that neither his mother nor his foster mother had had him baptized. As a result, a disagreement arose amongst the scholars of the town. Some said that he was blessed because of his many compassionate and merciful works, and that he had performed the holy office of the mass, but others argued that according to the written word (John 3:5) that no one can go to heaven who is not born again by the water and the spirit.

Finally it was decided to ask Pope Innocent III to decide the argument. He was of the mind that the priest was freed of original sin and had been blessed, referring to the witness of Augustine and Ambrosius who had said that there is also an unseen baptism.
